PLR Content – The Secret Sauce

PLR articles have been around for a decade or more and their use as content for blogs is just as old. Private label rights, or PLR are a special license that you purchase which gives you the legally right to edit and publish the article as your own. You may even include your own name as the author and your own resource box at the end of each article.

PLR articles are an inexpensive way to produce content for a blog and if you blog, you know that keeping a steady flow of content is not easy. PLR articles can help to keep that flow going when you run into a period of writer’s block.

Probably the major advantage for many is their cost. They’re cheap. Most quality writer freelancers charge lots for one article, you can buy PLR articles for as low as 25 cents each. But here’s the catch, PLR articles and “box sets” are sold to many people, hundreds, even thousands. Now you’ve got duplicate content running around the net.

There’s no great problem with that, from the search engines, but from readers who see the exact same content on different websites. Search engines care if you duplicate on your own site, but they can’t be concerned with different sites having the same content. After all, you just have to look at the news sites. They duplicate content, videos and audio all day long.

So, if using PLR is such as concern, what is the value?

I write four to five hours a day, at least 5 days a week. I do this for multiple sites and for multiple clients. Now I have to do some research, so some days I do very little “writing” because I’m researching. But it’s easy to run out of writing steam when you write 10 to 15 articles a day. I feel like I didn’t do anything when I write 5 in a four hour period.

Now, that’s my problem, not complaining either. But I do run out of flow. The right words disappear and the headlines get mundane. Several years ago I discovered PLR articles, and all the other PLR variations. I use these as thought-starters, idea-starters and rejuvenators.I read two or three of these and I get new ideas and a new excitement about the subject. It doesn’t matter how bad the PLR article might be, some are truly awful and some are excellent, if your attitude is right, you’ve got a buddy helping you out.

I buy PLR packages that can be resold, which I do, but for my use I rewrite. Not spin (never done that), but actually go through all the content and rewrite. I just finished an 80-page how-to e-book rewrite. It took me about 5 hours, over two days, but now it’s got my voice. I won’t comment on the original quality except to say that the grammar and spelling was near perfect. The information was a subject I am near expert on, so I could write from knowledge.

Now when I use that book either for sale or giveaway to my audience and subscribers, they are getting something that isn’t in the hands of everyone else. I also – usually – change graphics as I did with that e-book. I’ll put a different cover on the book.

Yes, it costs me a few dollars to make these changes, not counting my time, but I can turn out more content this way and it’s at least partially unique. In a world where there are millions of new websites each month, being completely unique is, well unique.

I create many Affiliate blogs over the course of a year, probably a couple of hundred. I sell most of them as up-and-running affiliate blogs that someone can build their own empire on, so I need a lot of diversified content. In those cases, many times PLR packages work well.

For republished articles I send to article services, I can’t ever remember using a PLR article to help my thought process. That’s one job that I want to be sure every word, and the structure is all my own. However, I do use a resource box on most of my affiliate blog sites because it’s another link back to another website of mine.
